  1. If you pay any attention to desktop-publishing issues, you are aware that some typefaces are Type 1 and others are Type 3. Until recently Type 1 was Adobe's proprietary format, but recently they distributed its specifications. The latest version of Fontographer from Altsys, version 3.1, can create either Type 1 or Type 3 fonts.

FonsterOne and FonsterThree illustrate the differences between these two formats. Both were created with the identical Fontographer file using Fontographer 3.1. FonsterOne is in Type 1 format while FonsterThree is in Type 3 format (naturally). You should notice a difference in size of files, in the time it takes each to print, and in their appearances at very small (i.e., below 12) point sizes.

If you thought that San Francisco, the font which Apple distributed at one time, was on the best typefaces ever designed, you may really like Fonster. Otherwise you probably will find it a fonstrosity. It was created by taking the capital letters from 26 different typefaces I have designed. The punctuation and numbers come from another ten or twelve. All lower case letters were adapted from a script typeface I have, and they give some coherence to the typeface.

Fonster may be freely distributed with the following restrictions: all files that come with it must be included in any distribution (including especially this ReadMe file), and no alterations of any sort may be made to any of these files. The code in the file Fonts is copyrighted by Robert Schenk. No part of the code may be used as raw material for any other typeface that is distributed in any way, either commercially or as public domain, without the written permission of the author.

P.S. By the way, if you are interested in a varied selection of inexpensive PostScript typefaces, mostly display, send me $25 and I will send you back twenty five typefaces and a catalog. Some of these typefaces are in Type 1 format, but many are in Type 3. (I am not sure it is worth my time to change them.)
